Computer Shuts Off Randomly

Logan Albright – Computer Shuts Off Randomly

Like any other machine, a computer requires cleaning and maintenance to perform its best, especially as the computer ages.

When your computer shuts off randomly, this can be a sign of many different issues including virus infection, malware and spyware, corrupted system files, overheating, driver incompatibility and memory corruption.

Once you fix the crashing issue, you should take steps to prevent future crashes by installing PC optimization software.

Computer Shuts Off? – It’s a Crash!

When your pc shuts off itself, it’s commonly referred to as a “crash”. The first step in troubleshooting a computer crash is to observe and document symptoms of the crash. View the computer’s behavior right before the crash and record any errors that appear on the screen.

Determine if the computer displays a blue screen at the moment of shutdown or if the computer just randomly restarts itself. Also record how often the crashes occur and whether they appear to be random or if, for example, launching a specific program causes the crash.

Troubleshooting Overheating Computers

If your computer does not already have a visual temperature gage on the tower or temperature software installed, install software that reports the changes in your processor temperature.
Real Temp is a great utility.

An overheating computer will shut itself down in order to protect the motherboard and processor from permanent damage. If you believe that your computer is overheating, you should add or replace the existing tower fans and renew the thermal paste between the processor and the CPU fan.

Troubleshooting Software

If your computer consistently shuts down but does not display a blue screen during the crash, this may be a sign of software issues. You should first ensure that your computer is not infected with a virus or spyware that is causing the system to lock up and reboot. Update your virus scanner and run a quick scan on your computer.

Remove any viruses found using the quick scan, which should be able to complete before the computer shuts off again. You can run a full scan later if you determine the computer is stable enough.

Install the newest Windows update on your computer to ensure operating bugs and software issues are addressed. Also consider uninstalling any new software you introduced to your system right before the issue began, or even rolling your computer back to a previously working Windows restore point.

Troubleshooting Hardware

Hardware issues are commonly indicated by a blue screen that displays right before your computer crashes. This may indicate that there are driver issues or corrupted RAM memory. If you installed new hardware or updated hardware drivers right before the crashes began to occur, you should remove the hardware or roll back to a previous Windows restore.

When RAM memory begins to corrupt, the computer will often blue screen and shut down at random times. Download and run memory tests on your computer to ensure the RAM is not the issue. If it is, you will need to replace the corrupt memory sticks with new RAM memory on your computer’s mother board.
